What should you know about gonorrhea throat antibiotics?

Gonorrhoea is caused by bacteria that can infect the throat after oral sexual contact. A throat infection may cause a sore throat, redness or swollen glands, but some people have no noticeable symptoms. A throat swab is used when this site may be involved; a urine or genital sample alone cannot reliably answer whether the throat is infected.

The antibiotic plan depends on local guidance, allergies, pregnancy and the places exposed. Do not use leftover tablets or share medicine. Taking an antibiotic intended for another infection may fail to clear gonorrhoea and can delay the right care.

Arrange sexual-health or GP care and explain that oral exposure may have occurred. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies and any recent antibiotics. Follow the prescribed instructions exactly, and avoid sexual contact until the clinician says it is safe after treatment and any advised follow-up.

Recent partners may need assessment and treatment, even if they feel well. Ask how to notify them confidentially. Testing for other sexually transmitted infections may also be appropriate, because one negative test does not exclude infections at another body site.

Seek prompt medical care for severe throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly worsening pain, high fever, or feeling faint. Contact a clinician soon if symptoms continue after treatment, return, or if you may have exposed a partner. Eye pain or reduced vision needs urgent assessment because gonorrhoea can affect the eye.

Ask which sample sites need testing, when sexual contact can resume, whether partners should be treated, and whether a follow-up test is needed. Also ask what symptoms should prompt a return visit and how to manage a medicine allergy.
