Gonorrhea skin rash: what should you know?

A disseminated gonorrhea infection may cause scattered spots or pustules, often alongside fever, joint aches, or swollen joints. The rash can be subtle and is not limited to the genital area. This presentation is different from common pimples, but visual inspection cannot reliably tell them apart. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, drug rash, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, and scabies are among the other explanations a clinician may consider. Genital, throat, or rectal symptoms may be absent.

Contact a doctor or sexual-health service for an assessment and appropriate samples. Mention when the rash began, where it started, any new sexual exposure, and symptoms such as discharge or painful urination. Testing should reflect the sites involved, not only the skin. Avoid sexual contact until you receive advice, and do not use unprescribed antibiotics: an incomplete or unsuitable medicine can delay correct care and complicate follow-up.

Seek same-day care for a rash with fever, significant joint pain, eye symptoms, or rapidly worsening illness. Go to emergency care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, confusion, or collapse. Arrange a routine appointment promptly if the rash persists or follows a possible sexual exposure, even without genital symptoms.

Ask which samples are recommended, whether other sexually transmitted infections should be checked, how partners will be supported, and what symptoms mean you need urgent review.
