Gonorrhea rash on the body: what to know

When gonorrhea spreads through the bloodstream, it can cause skin lesions along with fever, joint pain, or swollen joints. The lesions may be small spots, pustules, or other changing marks, and they may not appear on the genitals. Many other causes, including drug rash, contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, and scabies, can produce body spots or patches. Gonorrhea can also be present without obvious symptoms, so the skin finding and sexual exposure history must be assessed together.

Arrange prompt testing with a sexual-health clinician or doctor, especially after a new partner, condomless sex, or symptoms such as discharge, burning urination, pelvic or testicular pain. Testing may involve samples from the sites of exposure; a body rash does not identify the infected site. Avoid sex until a clinician gives clear advice, and do not share leftover antibiotics or treat yourself. Recent partners may need confidential notification and assessment.

Seek urgent medical care for fever with a spreading rash, severe joint pain or swelling, eye pain or vision change, severe pelvic or testicular pain, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can indicate infection requiring prompt treatment. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing trouble, facial swelling, confusion, or collapse.

Ask which tests match your sexual exposure, whether throat or rectal testing is needed, when treatment should begin, and when sex can safely resume. Tell the clinician about allergies and recent antibiotics.
