What should you know about glycerin for dry skin?

Glycerin is a humectant: it attracts and retains water in the outer layer of skin. It does not replace the skin barrier by itself. A product containing glycerin may also include occlusive ingredients that reduce water loss and emollients that soften rough spaces between skin cells.

Dryness can follow frequent washing, hot water, dry air or irritating products. Apply a fragrance-free glycerin moisturiser soon after bathing, while the skin is still slightly damp. Use enough to leave the surface comfortable, and reapply to hands after washing. Keep showers lukewarm and brief, choose a gentle cleanser for areas that need it, and avoid scrubbing flaky skin.
