What should you know about glossy red eyes?

Glossy red eyes can result from irritation, dryness, allergy, infection, or a problem needing prompt examination. The shiny appearance may come from tears or watering over an inflamed eye. Redness in one or both eyes does not identify the cause by itself.

A red eye may feel gritty, itchy, watery, sore or sticky. Allergy often brings itching and watering in both eyes; conjunctivitis can cause redness with discharge and may spread between people depending on its cause. Irritants such as smoke, dust, cosmetics or contact lenses can also inflame the surface. A clear, glossy eye can still be uncomfortable, so the appearance alone is not a reliable measure of severity.

If a chemical or particle entered the eye, rinse with clean running water and seek urgent advice, especially if pain or blurred vision remains.

Seek urgent medical help for severe pain, marked light sensitivity, a change in vision, injury, a chemical splash, a very swollen eyelid, or redness while wearing contact lenses.
