Short answer

Ginger may ease nausea for some people with food poisoning, but it does not remove the infection or replace rehydration and medical care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What ginger can and cannot do

Food poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever. Ginger tea or a small amount of ginger may feel settling for some people, but it cannot neutralise every toxin or treat every cause of illness. Strong preparations may irritate the stomach.

The main concern during vomiting or diarrhoea is fluid and salt loss. Symptoms can worsen quickly in young children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a condition that affects hydration.

Supportive care

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips. When appetite returns, choose simple foods and avoid alcohol. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell.

Do not rely on ginger to manage persistent vomiting or diarrhoea. Oral rehydration therapy can replace lost fluid and salts; severe dehydration may require IV fluid therapy in a medical setting.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, very little urine, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek prompt advice for a high fever, symptoms in a vulnerable person, or illness that is not settling.

Questions for your doctor

Do I need testing or treatment for this illness? Which rehydration drink is suitable, and what signs would mean I need urgent assessment or IV fluids?
