Getting pregnant after a molar pregnancy

A molar pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy in which placental tissue grows in an unusual way. After treatment, clinicians usually follow human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, because its pattern helps show whether abnormal tissue remains. A new pregnancy also raises hCG, so conceiving before monitoring is complete can make follow-up difficult to interpret.

Your specialist may recommend waiting until the planned monitoring period has finished before trying to conceive. The exact timing depends on the type of molar pregnancy, how hCG changes, and whether further treatment was needed. A previous molar pregnancy does not mean that a future pregnancy will be molar, but early contact with maternity care allows appropriate planning.

Attend every scheduled hCG appointment and keep a record of the results and treatment dates. Ask when monitoring is considered complete and which contraception is suitable during that interval. If chemotherapy was used, ask the oncology team how long to wait after the final dose and whether any additional pre-pregnancy checks are needed.

When your specialist confirms that trying is appropriate, arrange early pregnancy care. Tell the maternity team about the molar pregnancy and bring your treatment history. They may arrange an early ultrasound and follow-up hCG testing so the pregnancy and placental development can be assessed at the right time.

Contact your specialist promptly if hCG stops falling, rises after falling, or remains detectable when it was expected to clear. Seek urgent medical assessment for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or shortness of breath. Bleeding between periods can have many causes, but after a molar pregnancy it should be discussed with a clinician, especially during hCG follow-up.

Ask: Has my hCG monitoring finished? When can we safely try for pregnancy? Does my treatment history change the waiting period? What symptoms should prompt an urgent call? Who will coordinate my early ultrasound and pregnancy follow-up?
