Getting lip fillers: what to know

A qualified medical practitioner assesses your lip shape, movement, goals, previous procedures, allergies, medicines, and relevant health conditions. Most injectable lip treatments use Hyaluronic Acid Filler, a gel placed in selected areas to add fullness or define the border. The result depends on the product, injection technique, anatomy, and healing response. Fat Transfer is a different procedure that uses fat taken from another body area and has different preparation and recovery considerations.

Choose a regulated medical setting and ask to see the product packaging, expiry information, practitioner credentials, and an emergency plan. Share all medicines, supplements, cold-sore history, allergies, and previous fillers. After treatment, follow the clinic's instructions, use a cool compress if advised, avoid pressing or massaging the area unless told to do so, and postpone strenuous heat exposure until your practitioner says it is suitable. Swelling and tenderness can temporarily affect the shape.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, pale or dusky skin, unusual coolness, marked asymmetry, spreading redness, pus, or visual changes. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, widespread allergic symptoms, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Do not wait for a routine review if symptoms are rapidly progressing. Only an examination can determine whether a complication is present.
