What should you know about getting bit but can t find bed bugs?

Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frames, upholstery, and cracks, and a person may notice an itchy reaction after the insect is gone. Marks can appear as itchy red bumps, sometimes in clusters or a line, but their appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Mosquitoes, fleas, mites, contact dermatitis, eczema, and hives can look similar. Scratching can add crusting or small breaks in the skin, which may then become infected. A clinician can assess the pattern, timing, household exposures, and skin surface.

Inspect seams and nearby furniture with a torch, looking for live insects, shed skins, or dark spotting; avoid spraying chemicals on skin or bedding without following the product label. Wash bedding as directed for the fabric, reduce scratching, and keep a dated record of new marks and where they appear.

Cool compresses and fragrance-free moisturiser may calm irritation. A clinician may suggest oral antihistamine therapy or topical corticosteroids when appropriate, but treatment should match the skin findings and your health history.

Seek medical advice if itching persists, sleep is disrupted, the rash spreads, or the skin becomes painful, warm, swollen, crusted, or drains fluid. Get urgent help for facial or throat swelling, wheezing, faintness, or widespread hives.
