What should you know about getting a double chin?

Fullness under the chin can be present at a stable weight because inherited fat distribution and jaw or neck shape influence the profile. Weight change may add or reduce the area, while ageing can reduce skin elasticity and make existing fullness more visible. A soft fold is different from a new, firm lump or painful swelling.

A clinician assesses skin looseness, the amount and position of fat, muscle activity, jawline structure, and medical history. That assessment helps separate a cosmetic contour concern from a swollen gland or another neck problem.

If the concern is localized fat, fat dissolving injections may be discussed. Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling to target fat in selected areas. Neither option is suitable for every neck shape, and swelling, bruising, numbness, contour irregularity, or irritation can occur.

If loose skin or underlying structure is the main factor, reducing fat alone may not create the change you expect. A consultation should cover realistic improvement, the number of visits, aftercare, and what happens if the result is uneven.

Have a new neck swelling examined if it is firm, one-sided, painful, enlarging, or present with fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling.
