What should you know about getting a flu shot?

The vaccine presents the immune system with influenza material so it can build a protective response without causing influenza infection. It does not protect against every virus that causes coughs or fever, and protection changes as influenza viruses change. The vaccine used may be an inactivated vaccine. A clinician considers your age, pregnancy, health conditions, previous reactions, and any current illness before vaccination.

Tell the vaccinator about a previous serious reaction to a vaccine or one of its ingredients, and mention medicines or conditions that affect your immune system. After the injection, remain where advised for observation. A sore arm, tiredness, or mild fever can occur and usually settles with simple care. Seek advice if symptoms are severe, unusual, or worsening rather than assuming they are a normal vaccine response.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, severe dizziness, or collapse after vaccination. These may indicate a serious allergic reaction. If you are acutely unwell on the day of vaccination, ask the clinic whether to postpone and how to arrange another appointment.
