What should you know about an ADHD diagnosis?

Short answer
An ADHD diagnosis comes from a structured assessment of attention, activity, and impulsivity patterns across everyday settings.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Assessment focus
- Long-standing patterns and their effect across settings
- Helpful preparation
- Concrete examples, history, reports, and medicine details
What an ADHD assessment means
A clinician explores when difficulties began, how they affect school, work, relationships, sleep, and daily organisation, and whether they occur in more than one setting. They may ask for childhood history and observations from someone who knows you well. Difficulty concentrating, irritability, or feeling anxious can overlap with ADHD but may also reflect stress, sleep problems, mood conditions, medication effects, or other health issues. There is no single blood test that confirms ADHD.
How to prepare
Bring examples rather than a general impression: missed deadlines, losing items, unfinished tasks, restlessness, or trouble following conversations. Note how often the pattern occurs and what improves or worsens it. Gather school reports, previous diagnoses, medicine details, and relevant family history if available. A mental health assessment may include questionnaires and a clinical interview. Ask what support can start while the assessment is continuing.
When to seek prompt help
Arrange timely clinical support if attention or impulsivity is affecting safety, employment, education, relationships, or your ability to care for yourself. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, loss of contact with reality, or immediate danger. Anxiety, low mood, and sleep disruption deserve assessment in their own right, whether or not ADHD is diagnosed.
Questions for your doctor
What information should I bring? Which other conditions should be considered? What support is available before the assessment is complete, and how will results be explained?

Questions people ask
Can adults be assessed for ADHD?
Yes. Adult assessment considers current difficulties alongside developmental history and other possible explanations.
Does difficulty concentrating prove ADHD?
No. Concentration problems have several possible causes, so a clinician reviews the full pattern and context.
