Gestational hypertension symptoms

Gestational hypertension is identified by raised blood pressure during pregnancy, and many people feel well when it is found. A blood-pressure measurement is therefore more useful than how you feel alone. Some people may notice headache, visual changes, swelling or upper-abdominal discomfort, but these symptoms can have other causes and need clinical interpretation.

A clinician may repeat measurements and arrange urine or blood tests when symptoms or readings raise concern. Do not wait for symptoms before attending scheduled antenatal checks.

Attend every recommended check and bring any home readings to the appointment. Tell your maternity team about a headache that is unusual for you, flashing lights, blurred vision, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling or reduced wellbeing. Take prescribed medicine as directed and ask before taking a new painkiller or remedy.

Get urgent medical help for a severe or persistent headache, loss or change of vision, severe upper-abdominal pain, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion or a seizure. These symptoms can accompany a serious pregnancy or postnatal blood-pressure problem. Urgency is based on the symptom and how unwell you feel, not on whether hypertension has already been confirmed.
