Gestational Hypertension Pathophysiology

Gestational hypertension involves pregnancy-related changes in blood-vessel regulation that raise blood pressure, although the exact process can differ between pregnancies. The placenta, blood-vessel lining, immune signals, and the way the body handles fluid and circulation may all contribute. Pathophysiology explains what may be happening inside the body; it does not predict an individual course.

During pregnancy, circulation must adapt to support the uterus and placenta. If blood vessels do not relax or respond as expected, resistance to blood flow can rise and blood pressure may increase. Placental signals can also affect the vessel lining and the balance of fluids. In more severe disease, these changes may affect organs such as the kidneys, liver, brain, or lungs, and may alter placental function. This is why clinicians pair blood-pressure readings with urine, blood tests, symptoms, and fetal assessment.

You cannot reliably identify the underlying process by symptoms alone, and lifestyle changes cannot substitute for assessment. Attend antenatal checks so your team can watch trends and respond to changes. Use a home monitor only if instructed, and report readings in the way your clinician requests. Take prescribed medicine as directed and ask before using medicines or supplements that might affect blood pressure. Monitoring may include kidney and liver tests, platelet levels, urine checks, and fetal growth or wellbeing assessments.

Get urgent maternity advice for a severe headache, visual disturbance, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, fainting, heavy bleeding, or reduced fetal movement. These signs can indicate that blood-vessel or placental changes are affecting organs or the pregnancy. Emergency help is appropriate if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.
