Gestational Hypertension During Pregnancy

Gestational hypertension is high blood pressure that starts during pregnancy and needs regular review because it can affect maternal health and pregnancy planning. Some people have no symptoms, so antenatal blood-pressure checks are useful even when you feel normal.

Your care team may follow blood pressure more closely and look for protein in urine, changes in kidney or liver function, platelet changes, or signs that the placenta and baby need attention. They may also ask about headaches, vision, upper-abdominal pain, swelling, and fetal movement. The condition can stay stable, improve after birth, or develop features of preeclampsia. Its course cannot be predicted from how you feel on one day.

Attend planned appointments and bring a list of medicines, supplements, and home readings. If home monitoring is recommended, sit quietly first, use the technique taught by your clinician, and write down the result with the time. Medicines may be prescribed when needed; take them according to the plan. Your team may arrange urine and blood testing, fetal heart monitoring, or ultrasound assessment. Ask before using over-the-counter pain medicines or herbal products.

Call your maternity unit urgently for a severe headache, new visual disturbance, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, confusion, heavy bleeding, or less fetal movement. These symptoms require prompt review. If symptoms are severe or you cannot reach your maternity team, use emergency services.

Ask how often your blood pressure will be checked, whether you need home monitoring, and which symptoms should trigger same-day advice. Discuss the plan for fetal monitoring, medicines, work and activity, birth timing, and blood-pressure checks after delivery. A clear written plan can make changes easier to recognise.
