Gestational hypertension after birth

Giving birth does not make every blood-pressure problem disappear immediately. Your readings may be reviewed during the postnatal period, and medicine may be prescribed or adjusted. The team may also check for features of preeclampsia, which can occur after delivery.

Headache, visual changes, upper abdominal pain, sudden swelling or feeling very unwell should not be dismissed as ordinary recovery. Rest, feeding and newborn care can make symptoms easy to overlook, so tell someone and contact your maternity service when they appear.

Attend the blood-pressure checks arranged for you and take medicine as directed. Keep a record of readings and symptoms, and ask how to measure at home if that is part of your plan. Arrange postnatal follow-up through your antenatal care service and discuss medicines if you are breastfeeding.

Seek urgent assessment for a severe or persistent headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, pain beneath the ribs, chest pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, or sudden worsening swelling. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you feel seriously unwell.
