GERD nausea

Nausea linked with reflux may occur with heartburn, a sour taste, belching, regurgitation or upper abdominal discomfort. Reflux irritation can affect the oesophagus and throat, while nausea itself can reduce interest in food. The pattern may be more noticeable after a large meal or when lying down.

Nausea has many possible causes. Food poisoning, gastroenteritis, gastritis, gallstones, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A and low blood sugar can also cause it, so nausea alone does not establish GERD.

Take small sips of fluid and choose light meals if tolerated. Eat slowly, avoid lying down soon after eating and note foods, medicines, movement and timing that precede episodes. A pharmacist can advise about suitable symptom relief, especially if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Arrange a review when nausea keeps returning, interferes with eating or occurs with reflux symptoms that are not settling.

Get urgent help for severe chest tightness, breathing difficulty, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion, or signs of dehydration.
