GERD and sore throat: what should you know?

Reflux-related soreness may be worse after meals, on waking, or when lying down, and can accompany a sour taste, regurgitation, cough, hoarseness, or frequent throat clearing. Allergic rhinitis can cause post-nasal drainage and irritation. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, glandular fever, strep throat, or tonsillitis may bring fever, swollen glands, fatigue, cough, or painful swallowing. The symptom pattern matters: a sore throat does not by itself identify GERD or an infection.

Drink fluids, choose soothing foods, and rest your voice while the throat settles. If reflux seems linked to meals, try smaller portions, remain upright afterwards, and avoid eating shortly before sleep. Avoid smoke and other irritants. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment, since many sore throats are not bacterial. A clinician can decide whether reflux treatment, infection testing, or another approach is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat swelling, severe dehydration, or a muffled voice. Arrange medical review for a severe or persistent sore throat, high fever, a rash, neck swelling, repeated episodes, or symptoms with blood, chest pain, or difficulty swallowing.

Ask whether the timing suggests reflux or infection, whether your throat needs an examination or swab, and which warning signs should bring you back for review.
