GERD and heart palpitations: what to know

Burning behind the breastbone, bloating, or a rising sensation after meals may be reflux. Awareness of pounding, fluttering, skipped, or irregular beats can happen at the same time, but the sensations are not interchangeable. Dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, thyroid overactivity, anxiety, rhythm problems, and heart conditions can also cause palpitations. Record when episodes start, how long they last, whether the pulse feels regular, and what you were doing. This information helps a clinician decide whether an examination, electrocardiogram, or blood tests are needed.

Sit down, breathe slowly, and avoid driving if you feel faint. Note recent food, caffeine, alcohol, illness, fluid intake, and medicines. Hydration and regular meals may help when dehydration or low blood sugar contributes, but they do not replace assessment. Arrange a review for new, recurrent, or unexplained palpitations. Continue prescribed treatment unless a clinician tells you to change it.

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, collapse, new weakness, or confusion. Seek prompt care if the heartbeat remains very fast or irregular, or if symptoms occur with exertion. Do not label these warning signs as indigestion because heart problems can overlap with chest discomfort.
