What should you know about a genu varum correction brace?

Short answer
A genu varum correction brace may help selected children, but an orthopaedic assessment must guide its fit, schedule and expected benefit.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the brace is meant to do
Genu varum, also called bow legs, describes legs that curve outward so the knees remain apart when the feet are together. Some alignment patterns change naturally as a child grows; others relate to bone development, injury or another condition. A brace cannot correct every cause. In a growing child, it may provide controlled support while the legs develop, whereas a mature bone may need a different discussion.
How to approach treatment
Arrange an assessment that considers age, walking pattern, symmetry, pain and the shape of the legs. The clinician may examine the hips, knees and ankles and decide whether imaging is useful. If bracing is advised, follow the wearing schedule and skin-care instructions, and report pressure, rubbing, numbness or worsening discomfort. Paediatric Physiotherapy can support movement and strength, while Osteotomy is a surgical option discussed only when alignment needs structural correction.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice if the bowing is rapidly changing, clearly affects one side, causes persistent pain, leads to repeated falls or makes walking difficult. Contact the brace team if a child develops a blister, colour change, swelling or altered sensation under the device. Urgent assessment is appropriate after a significant injury with severe pain or inability to bear weight.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the alignment, whether the brace is intended to guide growth or relieve strain, how it should be worn, and what signs mean it needs adjustment. Ask when progress will be reviewed and which activities are suitable during treatment.

Questions people ask
Can a brace straighten every case of bow legs?
No. Its role depends on the child’s growth, the underlying cause and the degree of alignment.
What should parents check each day?
Check comfort, skin condition, circulation and whether the child can move as instructed.
