Genital rash from sweat: what to know

Heat rash can produce prickling or small irritated bumps when sweat ducts become blocked. Intertrigo develops where warm, moist skin rubs together and may become tender or macerated. Contact dermatitis can follow a new wash, wipe, lubricant, pad, detergent, or fabric. Ringworm, scabies, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, or a drug rash can also cause genital redness or itch, each requiring different care. The timing, distribution, surface, and associated symptoms help a clinician separate them.

Rinse gently, pat completely dry, change out of damp clothing, and wear loose breathable underwear. Avoid fragranced products, vigorous scrubbing, and shaving until the skin settles. A cool compress may ease irritation. Do not use steroid, antifungal, or combination creams on genital skin unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised the specific product and duration, because the wrong treatment can mask infection or worsen irritation.

Seek assessment when the rash lasts, returns, spreads, or has a clear edge, scaling, blisters, discharge, or night-time itch. Get urgent help for fever, severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, pus, open sores, or difficulty passing urine. A rash after a new medicine needs prompt advice, especially if there is facial swelling, breathing trouble, or widespread blistering.

Tell the clinician about sweating, exercise, products, medicines, sexual exposures, and anyone else with itch. Ask whether testing is needed and which cleansing, drying, and treatment routine is suitable for the affected site.
