What should you know about genetic ichthyosis?

Short answer
Genetic ichthyosis is an inherited skin condition causing persistent dryness and scaling that needs ongoing care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What genetic ichthyosis means
Ichthyosis affects the way the outer layer of skin forms and sheds. Skin cells can build up instead of leaving the surface smoothly, producing fine or larger scales and a rough texture. The appearance may be most noticeable on the legs, arms, scalp, or trunk, while folds can be less affected in some forms. Symptoms often begin in infancy or childhood, although the exact pattern varies between inherited types. Heat, sweating, dry air, and friction may make discomfort more noticeable. This condition is not caused by poor hygiene and is not contagious.
Daily care and treatment
A consistent routine helps soften scale and protect the skin barrier. Use short, lukewarm washes with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a rich moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp; an emollient-based plan may need repeating during the day. A dermatologist can suggest ingredients that loosen scale, such as urea or lactic acid, when appropriate for your age and skin sensitivity. Do not pick or aggressively scrub, because small cracks can become painful or infected. Keep a record of products that sting, and mention medicines or illnesses that may worsen dryness at review.
When to seek care
Arrange dermatology care if scaling is extensive, painful, itchy, limiting movement, or interfering with sleep. Seek prompt medical attention for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or cracks that are not healing, as these can signal infection. Babies and young children with widespread scaling, overheating, poor feeding, or unusual tiredness need timely assessment. A new change in an established pattern also deserves review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ichthyosis pattern fits your symptoms, whether testing or family assessment is useful, and which moisturiser and scale-softening ingredients suit your skin. You can also ask how to manage flares, bathing, heat, and care for affected children.
