What should you know about genetic depression?

Short answer
Genetic factors can influence vulnerability to depression, but they do not determine whether someone will develop it or which treatment will work; symptoms and circumstances guide care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How family history fits
Depression reflects interactions between inherited susceptibility, stress, physical health, sleep, medicines and social circumstances. Having a relative with depression may be relevant, but it does not make depression inevitable. Symptoms can include persistent low mood or loss of interest, fatigue, irritability, feeling anxious, difficulty concentrating and changes in sleeping or appetite. Insomnia and other sleep problems can intensify daytime symptoms, so the clinician considers the whole pattern rather than a family history alone.
Finding the right support
Arrange an appointment if symptoms persist, interfere with work or relationships, or make everyday tasks feel unmanageable. A clinician may ask about mood, sleep, physical health, medicines, alcohol and family history. Treatment can include talking therapy, practical activity and sleep support, medicine, or a combination. Keep a simple record of mood, energy, sleep and unwanted effects after treatment begins. Do not stop a prescribed antidepressant suddenly without advice.
When urgent help is needed
Get urgent help if you are thinking about suicide, feel unable to stay safe, hear or see things others do not, or have severe agitation with very little need for sleep. Contact emergency services or a trusted person who can stay with you while help is arranged. A sudden mood change, confusion or symptoms after starting a medicine also warrants prompt medical advice. Depression is treatable, and needing urgent support is a reason to seek it now.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your symptoms fit depression and whether a physical problem or medicine could be contributing. Discuss therapy options, medicine benefits and side effects, follow-up timing and what to do if mood worsens. Ask how family history affects the plan, whether relatives need information, and who to contact outside clinic hours.

Questions people ask
Does having depression in the family mean you will develop it?
No. Family history can affect vulnerability, while life experiences, health and other factors also matter.
Is there a genetic test that chooses an antidepressant?
Treatment is usually guided by symptoms, history, other medicines, side effects and follow-up rather than a single test.
