What should you know about generic anastrozole?

A generic medicine uses the same active ingredient and strength as the corresponding branded medicine. Differences may include the tablet’s colour, shape, inactive ingredients, packaging, and manufacturer. Your pharmacist can confirm the product supplied to you.

Anastrozole is an aromatase inhibitor. It reduces the body’s production of oestrogen, which can slow or control hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells. It is not suitable for every person or every tumour type.

Take it exactly as prescribed and at a regular time. Do not stop or change the dose because of side effects without contacting the oncology team. Tell the prescriber about other medicines, supplements, liver problems, bone conditions, and any possibility of pregnancy.

Joint stiffness, hot flushes, tiredness, mood changes, and vaginal symptoms can occur. The team may review bone health and discuss movement, symptom relief, or another treatment when needed. Keep a note of symptoms and when they occur.

Seek prompt advice for a new fracture, severe bone or joint pain, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, one-sided weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Report persistent side effects before they interfere with eating, sleeping, or daily activities.
