What should you know about generalized demodicosis?

Demodex mites can live in hair follicles and oil glands. When their activity is associated with inflammation, the skin may become persistently red, rough, itchy, burning or sensitive. Generalized disease means the pattern extends across several areas rather than staying in one small patch. It can resemble rosacea, acne, folliculitis or another inflammatory rash, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A clinician may examine the skin and, when needed, collect a surface sample or examine material from a follicle. The result helps distinguish mite-associated inflammation from infection, irritation or another condition.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if redness, rough bumps or itching continue or cover multiple facial areas. Bring a list of products and medicines, including steroid creams, and describe when the changes began. Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing and pause fragranced or irritating products while the skin is unsettled. Treatment may involve a prescribed topical or oral medicine, with the choice guided by the extent of disease and your health history. Do not use someone else’s anti-mite medicine.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, eye pain or changes in vision. Eye involvement needs particular attention because inflammation around the eyelids can affect comfort and, in some cases, the eye surface. If symptoms are mild but persistent, book a routine dermatology visit rather than repeatedly changing products.
