TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Sticky electrodes sit on the skin near, but not directly over, the painful area. The device sends patterned pulses that feel like tingling; the intensity should remain comfortable. Relief varies and may last only while the device is being used or for a short time afterward. TENS supports symptom management and does not remove the cause of pain.

Read the device instructions and begin with a low setting while seated. Keep electrodes on clean, intact skin, space them apart, and remove them before adjusting their position. Do not place pads across the front of the neck, over the head, through the chest, or over broken or infected skin. Keep the unit away from water, and replace electrodes when they no longer adhere properly. Stop for skin irritation, painful shocks, dizziness, or unusual symptoms.

Ask a clinician before using TENS if you have an implanted electrical device, a heart rhythm condition, reduced sensation, epilepsy, or are pregnant. Seek assessment for new weakness, progressive numbness, severe injury-related pain, fever, or pain that is worsening or limiting daily activities. TENS should not delay evaluation of a new or unexplained problem.
