What should you know about GDM OGTT?

The test begins with a blood sample, commonly after fasting. You then drink a prepared glucose solution and wait while additional blood samples are taken at specified intervals. Comparing the readings helps the clinician see how efficiently your body processes glucose during pregnancy.

The word OGTT describes the method, not a diagnosis. A result is interpreted alongside your pregnancy history, symptoms, and the laboratory's thresholds. If gestational diabetes is diagnosed, your care team may discuss glucose checks, food choices, activity, or medicines.

Check the fasting period and medicine instructions with the clinic before the visit. Keep your usual meals beforehand unless told otherwise, and arrange enough time to stay until every sample is collected. Wear comfortable clothing and carry something to eat for when the test is complete.

During the appointment, remain seated and avoid food, smoking, and unnecessary exertion. Tell the phlebotomist if you feel dizzy, sweaty, shaky, or nauseated. These symptoms may occur while fasting or after the glucose drink and should be assessed at the time.

Call your maternity service if you are unable to complete the test, vomit the drink, or remain unwell after leaving. Get urgent medical help for fainting, severe confusion, chest pain, serious breathing problems, or heavy bleeding during pregnancy.
