What should you know about gastritis throwing up blood?

Blood may look bright red, dark, or like coffee grounds. Irritation or inflammation from gastritis can bleed, but a peptic ulcer, a tear after forceful vomiting, or another upper-digestive problem can also be responsible. Heavy alcohol use and some medicines can increase concern for stomach bleeding. The appearance may change as blood remains in the stomach, so do not use colour alone to judge severity.

Blood in vomit is a symptom requiring assessment; it is not proof that gastritis is the cause. Dizziness, weakness, fainting, fast breathing, pale or clammy skin, black stools, or severe abdominal pain can indicate significant illness.

Sit upright or lie on your side if weak, avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory painkillers, and do not eat or drink while waiting for urgent instructions. Take or photograph a list of medicines, including blood thinners, and tell clinicians about the amount and appearance of the vomit.

Even a small amount of suspected blood needs same-day urgent assessment because the source cannot be confirmed at home. Emergency help is especially important for repeated vomiting, black stools, fainting, confusion, severe pain, breathlessness, or worsening weakness.
