Gastritis and heart palpitations: what to know

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining and may bring upper-abdominal discomfort, nausea, indigestion or reduced appetite. Vomiting or drinking less can disturb fluid balance, while pain and worry can increase awareness of normal heartbeat changes. Palpitations can also occur with dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, an overactive thyroid, anxiety or a heart rhythm problem. A symptom does not identify its cause on its own.

Note when the sensation starts, how long it lasts, whether it feels regular or uneven, and what you were doing. Sip fluids if you can keep them down, choose gentle meals, and avoid alcohol and personal triggers such as excess caffeine. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician may review your medicines, pulse and blood pressure and arrange blood tests or an electrocardiogram.

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, marked weakness or confusion. Seek prompt medical assessment if episodes are new, persistent, repeatedly returning, or accompanied by ongoing vomiting or signs of dehydration. Ask about possible contributors such as Anaemia, Dehydration, Hyperthyroidism, Hypoglycaemia, Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure or Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
