Gas and heart palpitations

Bloating or trapped gas can create upper-abdominal pressure and make normal heartbeat sensations more noticeable. Anxiety, dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, an overactive thyroid, and changes in heart rhythm can also cause palpitations. Atrial fibrillation is one rhythm problem that may feel irregular or uneven. Heart failure is associated with symptoms such as breathlessness and swelling, not simply gas. The timing, rhythm, duration, medicines, and accompanying symptoms help distinguish these possibilities.

Stop exertion, sit upright, and breathe slowly while noting whether the heartbeat feels fast, irregular, or forceful. Record what you were doing, recent food and drinks, sleep, stress, fluid intake, and any new medicine. Avoid excess caffeine, nicotine, and stimulant products until you have advice. Do not assume relief after passing gas proves the heart is unaffected. Arrange a medical review for recurrent, new, or unexplained episodes.

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain or pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, collapse, confusion, blue lips, or new weakness on one side. Seek urgent assessment for a sustained rapid or irregular heartbeat, especially if you feel dizzy or unusually unwell. Do not drive yourself if symptoms are severe.

Ask whether you need an ECG or blood tests for anaemia, thyroid problems, dehydration, or low blood sugar. Share your episode record and mention family heart history, pregnancy, diagnosed conditions, and every medicine or supplement you use.
