What should you know about Garre's osteomyelitis of the mandible?

The mandible is the lower jaw. In Garre osteomyelitis, persistent irritation beneath the bone covering can stimulate a firm expansion of the jaw. A deep cavity, dental infection, erupting tooth, or another local source may be involved. Swelling, tenderness, altered bite, or difficulty chewing can occur, but symptoms vary.

A dentist or oral and maxillofacial specialist examines the teeth, gums, bite, jaw movement, and nearby tissues. Dental imaging helps show the tooth roots and the layered bone response; further imaging or tests may be needed when the picture is unclear.

Book a dental assessment rather than trying to treat jaw swelling at home. Keep a record of pain, swelling, drainage, fever, tooth sensitivity, and changes in chewing. Management focuses on the source, which may mean treating a tooth, controlling infection, or addressing abnormal tissue. If reconstruction is needed after removal of damaged bone, Bone Grafting may be discussed.

Get urgent help for swelling that spreads toward the neck or eye, fever with worsening pain, pus, inability to open the mouth, difficulty swallowing, drooling, or any breathing problem. New numbness or a rapidly changing lump also warrants prompt specialist review.
