Mumps is a viral infection that can cause painful swelling near the jaw, fever, headache, tiredness and difficulty chewing or swallowing. Swollen glands can occur on one or both sides. Because similar symptoms have other causes, a clinician may ask about contact with illness, vaccination and the symptom timeline before advising testing or isolation.

Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing hurts. Paracetamol may help fever or discomfort when it is suitable for you; follow the package directions and avoid doubling ingredients in combination products. Do not share cups, utensils or towels. Stay away from school, work and close contact for the period advised by a clinician, and call ahead before attending a clinic so infection precautions can be arranged.

Arrange a GP consultation for suspected mumps, especially after contact with a case or when jaw swelling and fever appear. Get urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, breathing difficulty, dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or painful swelling of the testicles. Emergency advice is also needed if a person becomes unusually drowsy or difficult to wake.
