When gallstones can be dangerous

A stone may remain in the gallbladder without causing symptoms, but movement into a duct can obstruct fluid flow. This can inflame the gallbladder, irritate the pancreas or allow infection in the bile ducts. Symptoms may include steady upper abdominal pain, nausea, [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/), fever or yellowing of the eyes. [Gallstones](/conditions/gallstones/) can therefore range from an incidental finding to an urgent problem.

Arrange medical review for repeated attacks, pain after eating, or symptoms that are becoming stronger or lasting longer. A clinician may use an examination, blood tests and ultrasound to look for inflammation or duct obstruction. Treatment depends on the finding and may include monitoring, medicines, a procedure to clear a duct, or gallbladder surgery.
