What should you know about gallstones bleeding between periods?

Gallstones are stones in the gallbladder and commonly cause upper-right abdominal pain, nausea, or discomfort after meals. They do not explain bleeding from the vagina between menstrual periods. Bleeding between periods can have several causes, including changes in contraception, cervical irritation, infections such as Chlamydia, Endometrial Polyps, Uterine Fibroids, or changes in the womb lining. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can also present with abnormal bleeding, so persistent or repeated bleeding deserves review; the symptom does not establish any one diagnosis.

First confirm where the blood is coming from. Blood in urine or stool needs a different assessment from vaginal bleeding. Note the timing, amount, colour, pain, sexual activity, contraception, and pregnancy possibility.

Arrange a clinical appointment, especially if bleeding is new, recurrent, or happens after sex. A clinician may ask about cycles and medicines, perform an examination, offer infection testing or a pregnancy test, and consider imaging or other tests. Continue any gallstone care plan, but do not assume treating gallstones will stop vaginal bleeding. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or hormones without advice.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding with dizziness or faintness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding, or yellow skin with intense upper-abdominal pain. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding follows sex, continues, or occurs after menopause.

Ask whether the blood is vaginal, urinary, or bowel-related; whether infection or pregnancy testing is needed; and whether examination or imaging should check the cervix and womb. Mention your gallstone symptoms separately and ask which warning signs should prompt immediate care.
