What should you know about Galleri liquid biopsy?

The test looks for patterns in DNA fragments circulating in the blood. A signal may suggest a tissue of origin, which can help a clinician decide what examinations to consider next. It is not the same as taking a piece of a tumour. A result without a signal does not rule out cancer, because a tumour may release too little detectable material or may not match the test's targets.

A signal also does not prove that cancer is present. Follow-up may include examination, imaging and a tissue biopsy chosen for the suspected area. Interpretation depends on your symptoms, medical history and other results.

Ask what question the test is intended to answer, how your sample will be handled and when results will be discussed. Keep planned appointments even if the result is reassuring. If a signal is reported, ask which follow-up test is needed, how quickly it should happen and what other explanations are possible. Do not start or stop treatment based on this blood test alone.

The blood draw itself usually causes only local soreness or bruising. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding that does not stop, fainting, severe weakness or trouble breathing. Contact your clinician promptly for new persistent symptoms such as unexplained bleeding, a growing lump, ongoing pain or unintentional weight change; these need clinical assessment regardless of the test result.

Ask: What does this test add in my situation? What would a signal or no signal change? Which biopsy or scan would follow? How will uncertainty be handled? When will we review the result?
