Gallbladder and heartburn: what to know

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when stomach contents move upwards into the food pipe. It may bring a sour taste or worsen after eating or lying down. Gallbladder pain is more often steady discomfort in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, sometimes with nausea and spread to the back or shoulder. Symptoms can overlap, so location and timing are useful clues rather than a diagnosis.

Acid Reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, a peptic ulcer, and some medicines can contribute to burning upper-abdominal or chest symptoms. Gallbladder symptoms should be considered separately when pain is localised or follows meals.
