What should you know about FVC spirometer?

FVC stands for forced vital capacity. During spirometry, you breathe in fully, seal your lips around a mouthpiece and blow out as hard and long as instructed. The device records the volume exhaled and the flow of air. Clinicians interpret FVC alongside other measurements, especially FEV1 and the ratio between them, plus your age, height, sex and symptoms. A result is not a diagnosis by itself; technique and effort can influence it.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the clinic's instructions about inhalers, smoking, meals and vigorous exercise before the test. Tell the clinician if you have chest pain, a recent operation, an infection or feel unwell. During testing, sit upright, use the nose clip if provided and follow each instruction closely. Several attempts are usually needed so the team can check that the readings are consistent. You may cough or feel briefly light-headed; tell the tester if this happens.

Tell the testing team immediately if you develop chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness or wheezing that does not settle after stopping. Outside the test, seek urgent help for sudden severe breathing difficulty, blue lips or confusion.
