FUT is a surgical hair-restoration approach. Hair-bearing skin is removed from a donor zone, usually the back or sides of the scalp. The strip is dissected into grafts containing naturally grouped follicles. The surgeon then places those grafts into carefully arranged openings in the recipient area.

Because the donor wound is closed, the method creates a line that must be considered when choosing a haircut. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, donor reserve, scalp laxity, hair characteristics, and the design needed for natural coverage.

During consultation, ask how the surgeon will preserve existing donor and recipient hair and how future thinning affects the design. Give a full health history, including medicines, allergies, previous scarring, and scalp symptoms. Follow the clinic’s instructions about preparation and transport.

In recovery, keep the donor incision and grafts clean as directed. Avoid scratching, pressure, heavy exertion, and direct sun until cleared. Mild discomfort, swelling, crusts, and temporary shedding may happen, but the team should explain what fits your course and how to manage it.

Report increasing tenderness, warmth, redness, discharge, fever, persistent bleeding, or a donor incision that separates. Urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, widespread swelling with allergy symptoms, collapse, or bleeding that will not stop with the instructed pressure.
