Fungus under an acrylic nail: what to know

An acrylic enhancement can create a small space between the natural nail and the product. Water and debris may collect there, while filing or trauma can weaken the nail surface. A fungal infection is one possibility; bacterial growth, contact irritation, or injury can create similar colour changes. A green, yellow, white, or brown area cannot be diagnosed reliably from appearance alone.

Stop applying a new enhancement and arrange a nail or dermatology assessment. Have the acrylic removed gently by a trained professional; do not peel, pry, or aggressively file it because that can tear the nail plate. Keep the exposed nail clean and dry, avoid prolonged soaking, and do not seal a changing nail beneath polish or another acrylic layer. A clinician may take a clipping or scraping, then discuss topical or oral antifungal treatment if fungus is confirmed. Laser treatment or nail surgery may be considered in selected situations.

Seek prompt care for throbbing pain, increasing swelling, warmth, pus, spreading redness, or a nail that is lifting rapidly. Arrange an assessment for persistent green or dark discolouration, especially when the natural nail is tender or the surrounding skin is irritated. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should not delay evaluation.

Ask whether the acrylic should be removed in the clinic, whether a sample can identify fungus or bacteria, when it is safe to use nail enhancements again, and how to protect the nail while it grows out.
