What should you know about fungal rash on dog?

Ringworm in dogs may cause circular hair loss, broken hairs, scaling, crusting, or itch, but many skin problems look similar. Flea allergy, bacterial infection, mites, irritation, and other causes can produce bald or inflamed patches. A veterinarian may examine hairs or skin and consider the distribution of lesions and the animal's general health.

Some fungal infections can pass from animals to people through direct contact or contaminated bedding, brushes, and surfaces. Children and people with reduced immunity should avoid handling suspicious lesions until advice is obtained.

Book a veterinary appointment and do not apply human creams, essential oils, or leftover medicines unless the veterinarian approves them. Wash hands after touching the dog, limit close contact with affected areas, and avoid sharing brushes, blankets, or furniture until the cause is clear. Follow the prescribed bathing, topical, or oral treatment schedule; stopping early can allow lesions to return. Clean washable bedding and vacuum resting areas as advised.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if lesions are spreading quickly, the dog is very itchy, painful, tired, not eating, or has widespread crusting or discharge. Seek medical advice for any person who develops an itchy, scaly, expanding patch after contact with the dog. Do not assume every bald patch is fungal.
