What should you know about fungal itching on skin?

A fungal rash may be scaly, flaky, cracked, or have a more defined edge. It can occur on the feet, groin, body folds, or other warm, damp areas, and scratching may leave broken skin. The appearance is not enough to confirm the cause: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, hives, and scabies can also cause itching. A clinician may ask about household exposure, recent antibiotics, sweating, and whether the rash is changing shape.

Keep the area dry, wear breathable clothing, and avoid scratching or sharing towels. If an antifungal is recommended, apply it to the surrounding affected skin as directed and complete the advised course. Wash hands after touching the area and launder clothes or linens that contact it. Avoid using leftover prescriptions or mixing several creams, since this can irritate skin and make the pattern harder to assess.

Get prompt medical advice if the rash is painful, hot, swollen, oozing, rapidly expanding, or accompanied by fever. Arrange an appointment for a rash that keeps returning, affects a large area, involves nails or the scalp, or does not improve with appropriate treatment. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice early.
