The test is chosen when the appearance is unclear, symptoms have returned, or treatment decisions depend on identifying the cause.

The collection is usually brief, although scraping an inflamed area or sampling beneath a nail can feel uncomfortable. Tell the clinician about recent antifungal products and medicines, and follow instructions about cleaning the site. Do not start, stop, or share treatment based only on the test name. After results are reviewed, your clinician may recommend a topical option, another test, or an oral antifungal treatment when the findings and examination support that approach.
