What should you know about function of kojic acid?
Short answer
Kojic acid helps reduce the formation of pigment in skin, so it may gradually soften the appearance of dark spots.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Use
- Topical ingredient for the appearance of excess pigmentation.
- Main caution
- Irritation can worsen colour change in some skin.
- Daytime care
- Use sun protection alongside a brightening plan.
How kojic acid works
Skin pigment is produced through a pathway that includes an enzyme involved in melanin formation. Kojic acid interferes with that pathway when applied topically, which can make newly forming excess pigment less noticeable over time. It does not erase every cause of discolouration, and it does not prevent new darkening from sun exposure, inflammation, hormones or an untreated skin condition.
Results depend on the type and depth of pigmentation, the formulation, how often it is used and how well the skin tolerates it. Irritation can itself leave darker marks in some skin tones, so stronger application is not automatically better.
Using it thoughtfully
Use the product exactly as directed and introduce it cautiously, especially if your skin is sensitive or you also use exfoliating acids, retinoids or other brightening ingredients. Apply sun protection during the day because ultraviolet exposure can maintain or deepen pigmentation. Stop and seek advice if burning, swelling, blistering or a persistent rash develops. A clinician can help identify whether the mark is melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation or another condition before treatment is chosen.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology review when pigmentation changes quickly, bleeds, becomes painful, forms a sore, or looks unlike the surrounding marks. Seek help for persistent irritation or worsening darkening after starting kojic acid. A new or changing spot should not be assumed to be a cosmetic concern from colour alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the pigmentation, whether kojic acid suits your skin, which products should not be combined with it, and how to recognise irritation before it causes further colour change. Ask how long to try the product before reassessment.

Questions people ask
Does kojic acid bleach the skin?
It is intended to reduce excess pigment in selected areas, not to change a person’s natural skin colour throughout the body.
Can kojic acid irritate skin?
Yes. Redness, burning or a rash can occur, particularly with frequent use or combinations that are harsh for the skin.
