Full glucose tolerance test: what to expect

Short answer

A full glucose tolerance test checks how your body handles glucose over several blood samples after you drink a measured glucose solution.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test means

The test is often arranged during pregnancy when a screening result or personal history suggests that a closer check is useful. It can also be used outside pregnancy when a clinician needs more detail about glucose regulation. A fasting sample gives a starting point, then later samples show how glucose changes after the drink. The timing and number of samples depend on the clinic's protocol.

You may feel thirsty, briefly nauseated, light-headed, or tired during the appointment. These sensations should be reported rather than hidden, especially if you feel faint. A result outside the expected range does not by itself explain the cause; your clinician interprets it alongside your health, pregnancy stage, medicines, and other tests.

How to prepare and get through it

Follow the clinic's fasting instructions exactly. Ask whether you should take regular medicines, and tell the team if you are unwell because illness can affect glucose readings. Bring water only if the clinic permits it, and plan to remain at the site while samples are collected. Wear comfortable clothing and bring something to occupy you between samples.

After the final sample, you can usually eat and resume normal activities unless the clinic advises otherwise. Keep a snack available for afterwards if you have been fasting, and avoid driving until you feel steady if the appointment leaves you dizzy.

When to get help

Tell the testing staff immediately if you vomit, feel close to fainting, develop marked weakness, or cannot finish the drink. Contact your maternity or medical team after leaving if you remain unwell, cannot keep fluids down, or develop concerning symptoms such as confusion or severe dizziness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why the full test has been recommended, how long the appointment should take, whether fasting is required, which medicines to take that morning, and when you should expect the result. Ask what the next step would be if a reading is outside the clinic's expected range.
