What should you know about full body hives causes?

Hives, or urticaria, are swollen areas of skin that may appear suddenly, change shape, and fade while new welts form elsewhere. Triggers can include a food, medicine, viral illness, pressure, heat, cold, exercise, or emotional stress; sometimes no clear trigger is found. Hives may occur with itchy skin and can be confused with other forms of skin rash.

Swelling beneath the skin, particularly around the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet, is called angioedema. Hives themselves do not establish which trigger is responsible, so note timing, foods, medicines, illness, and exposures rather than assuming a single cause.

Keep a simple record of when each outbreak starts, how long individual welts last, and what happened beforehand. Use cool compresses, avoid overheating and tight clothing, and try not to scratch. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend an oral antihistamine after considering pregnancy, age, other medicines, and medical conditions.

Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, even if you suspect it triggered the hives. Recurrent or persistent episodes may need assessment; oral corticosteroid treatment is sometimes considered for selected severe flares under medical supervision.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or sudden swelling of the tongue or mouth. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly worsening widespread hives or swelling. Arrange a routine review when episodes recur, individual marks remain fixed and painful, or symptoms leave bruising.
