What should you know about a full body checkup with vitamin D?

A clinician may review your symptoms, medical history, medicines, family history, blood pressure, pulse, weight and lifestyle. Depending on your situation, blood or urine tests may assess areas such as blood sugar, blood counts, kidney function and cholesterol. Vitamin D is usually assessed with a blood test when symptoms, limited sun exposure, bone concerns, dietary factors or a medical condition make it relevant; it is not automatically needed for every person.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including any vitamin D product, and mention previous results or ongoing symptoms. Ask whether fasting is needed because this depends on the tests ordered. Do not start a high-dose vitamin D supplement solely because a test is planned. Results should be interpreted alongside your history, examination and other findings, rather than in isolation.

Arrange an appointment if you have persistent tiredness, muscle weakness, bone pain, repeated falls or another concern that is affecting daily life. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion or sudden weakness. A routine health check does not replace prompt assessment of a new or severe symptom.
