What should you know about frothy diarrhoea?

Short answer
Frothy diarrhoea can happen when gas mixes with loose stool or when digestion and absorption are disturbed, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluid and watch for dehydration
- Track
- Duration, food links, travel, pain, fever and stool changes
- Review needed
- Persistent, recurrent or weight-affecting diarrhoea
Possible causes
A short-lived episode may occur with gastroenteritis, food poisoning or a food intolerance. Persistent, greasy, unusually foul-smelling or difficult-to-flush stool can suggest poor absorption and needs assessment. Giardiasis may follow contaminated water or food and can cause prolonged diarrhoea, gas and cramps. Coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome and an overactive thyroid can also affect bowel habit, but symptoms overlap. Froth by itself cannot identify the condition.
Care at home and tracking
Replace lost fluid with frequent drinks; an oral rehydration solution may help when losses are heavy. Eat small, plain meals if hungry and avoid alcohol. Do not start antibiotics or restrictive diets without advice. Record when the stool began, its appearance, foods eaten, travel, sick contacts, medicines, pain, fever and weight change. Arrange a clinical review if it continues, keeps returning or interferes with eating and daily activities. Relevant conditions include [Food Intolerance](/conditions/food-intolerance/) and [Giardiasis](/conditions/giardiasis/).
When to seek help
Seek urgent care for severe dehydration, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, severe abdominal pain, black stool or visible blood. Get prompt advice for persistent fever, marked weakness, unintentional weight loss, diarrhoea after travel or symptoms in a young child, older adult or person with a weakened immune system. Ongoing symptoms may need testing for infection, inflammation, thyroid problems or malabsorption. See [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/) and [Gastroenteritis](/conditions/gastroenteritis/) for related information.
Questions for your appointment
Could an infection, food intolerance or medicine explain this pattern? Do I need stool or blood tests? Should I avoid a particular food before testing? How can I replace fluids safely? Could [Coeliac Disease](/conditions/coeliac-disease/), [Crohn's Disease](/conditions/crohns-disease/) or [Irritable Bowel Syndrome](/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/) fit my other symptoms?

Questions people ask
Does frothy diarrhoea always mean a food intolerance?
No. Infection, gas, digestive conditions and medicines can produce similar stool changes, so duration and associated symptoms guide assessment.
When should I seek urgent help?
Get urgent care for severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, severe abdominal pain, inability to keep fluids down, black stool or visible blood.
