Fresh Blood After Menopause: What to Know

After menopause, lower oestrogen can make vaginal and cervical tissues thinner and drier, so they may bleed more easily. Polyps, infection, pelvic organ prolapse, or changes in the womb lining can also be involved. Menopause commonly includes stopped periods, hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, low sex drive, and vaginal dryness, but fresh bleeding after periods have stopped needs separate review.

Fresh blood after menopause can be a presentation of womb, cervical, or vaginal cancer, but the symptom alone cannot show the cause. Assessment may include a pelvic examination, ultrasound, and sampling of tissue when indicated.

Contact a GP or gynaecology service and describe the colour, amount, timing, and whether the blood followed sex or an examination. Mention pelvic pressure, discharge, pain, urinary symptoms, or medicines that affect bleeding. Keep a pad or note of episodes if that helps you describe them.

Do not assume bleeding is simply part of menopause. Until reviewed, use gentle washing and avoid vaginal products that sting or irritate. Your clinician can discuss moisturisers, local treatment, or investigation according to the finding.

Seek urgent medical care if bleeding is heavy, does not settle, or occurs with severe pelvic pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or marked weakness. Sudden severe pain with bleeding also needs prompt assessment. Bring a list of medicines and describe any previous bleeding investigations.

Ask what examination is needed, whether the womb lining needs imaging or sampling, and when results will be available. Ask how vaginal dryness or prolapse might contribute and which symptoms should prompt an urgent call while you wait.
