Frequent laryngitis: what to know

Laryngitis is inflammation around the voice box and commonly causes a hoarse, weak, or rough voice. A common cold may trigger a short episode. Repeated loud speaking, singing, shouting, smoke, dry air, or throat clearing can keep irritating the vocal cords. Acid reflux can reach the throat and contribute to hoarseness, cough, or a need to clear the throat, sometimes without obvious heartburn. The pattern matters more than any single symptom.

Rest your voice by speaking less and at a comfortable volume; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, avoid smoke, and use humidified air if dryness is a trigger. Do not repeatedly clear your throat; sip water instead. If reflux symptoms are present, discuss meal timing and treatment with a clinician or pharmacist. Antibiotics do not treat every cause of laryngitis, so use them only when prescribed.

Arrange a GP consultation for hoarseness that persists, keeps returning, or affects work, singing, or swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, coughing blood, or severe illness. A persistent voice change deserves examination even when there is little pain.

Ask whether reflux, infection, voice use, medicines, or another throat problem could be contributing; how long you should rest your voice; and whether an ear, nose, and throat referral is appropriate. Mention smoking or occupational voice demands if relevant.
