What should you know about freezing moles off?

Moles vary in colour, shape, size, and thickness. A clinician may compare the spot with nearby moles, examine it with magnification, and ask whether it has changed. Freezing can obscure or destroy tissue that might otherwise be examined, and an incomplete treatment can leave part of the lesion behind.

A changing mole does not automatically mean melanoma, but change deserves assessment. Pay attention to a new or evolving outline, several colours, persistent itching, crusting, bleeding, or a spot that looks unlike your other moles.

Book a dermatology assessment before trying to remove the mole. Do not apply freezing products, acids, or home cutting devices, and avoid picking a scab over the area. Photographing the spot for your own comparison can help you describe change, but it does not replace an examination.

If removal is appropriate, the clinician may discuss Mole Removal or Surgical Excision. The method depends on the mole’s appearance, depth, location, symptoms, and whether tissue should be sent for examination. Ask about wound care and the chance of a lasting mark before treatment.

Seek prompt dermatology review for a mole that changes noticeably, bleeds without being injured, develops a persistent crust or sore, becomes increasingly itchy, or shows an irregular border or uneven colour. After any attempted home treatment, seek care for spreading redness, pus, increasing pain, fever, or bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure.

Ask: Does this spot need monitoring or removal? Should the whole lesion be removed? Will the tissue be examined? What scar or pigment change might occur? How should I protect the area while it heals?
